Amos

E-mail to a friend

Like the famous cookies, "Famous Amos," here at the sanctuary everyone knows me and yes, everyone loves me!! While I know some may find me addictive (like the cookie) and always want to take me out for a walk, I'll be frank and share with you that I am slow to warm up to new faces. Those who I have let into my inner circle totally adore me and will tell you I am huge mush although I may look intimidating. As handsome as I am, I must give credit to my volunteer friends who carefully keep me groomed and looking my best. I prefer quiet environments so a home without other dogs and teenie kids would bring a huge smile and tail wag to my face. Stop by today and see why I could be the perfect match for you.

Angel

E-mail to a friend

Hello there, my name is Angel, and maybe I was named after the angel who must have been watching over me to get me to CFC, but most people agree it's a good name for me, because it describes me pretty well. I am an adult hound mix who arrived at CFC in the summer of 2008 covered in ticks, quite weak, and malnourished. After much testing and medical treatments and rest and tlc, I am starting on the road back to health. Despite the hardships I have faced, I am a sweet and gentle hound. Please click on my photo to read more about me and my story.

Barney

E-mail to a friend

Courtesy Listing Only. Please refer to contact below. Paw wave to you from Barney, one of the newest kids in the county!! At the tender age of close to 5 months, a home with kids, multiple laps for me to stretch out on and other dogs who can show me the ropes, would suit me just fine. Built more like my dad who was a Brittany spaniel, I also have some traces of mom who was a 26lb beagle. If you look closely at my "jacket," you'll see I have some fabulous, subtle spots which all the women just love! Weighing in at just 17lbs, for a little guy such as myself, I have already proven to be a superior fence scaler (a 6ft fence will work best for me)and a quick learner on basic commands. A total gentleman at the vet when I got my first round of shots, I know I have it in me to be the perfect pet. To learn more, email Rayn at r.rock@earthlink.net or call her at 804-310-1177.

Beau

E-mail to a friend

Hi! My name is Beau and time has flown by! It's hard to believe that I am already 10 yrs old. That's 70 years for you humanoids! Believe me when I say that I do not even come close to acting like a senior citizen. To prove my point, I have just recently been "hooked" up with a hot looking, albeit greiving tickhound widow, Bonnie. You see, shortly before I arrived, Bonnie had lost her long time companion Clyde. She was very sad and moped around. Enter Beau, and let the happy days begin again! My beautiful Miss Bonnie is smiling now as I am the master doter and oh, so very kind and cuddly with her. While I am obviously super with other dogs, I also love people. After my most recent walk, I delighted my walker by nuzzling into her lap as we sat and chatted. You should have seen how excited she was when I started rolling around on my back and shot her some award winning smiles. She complimented me on how sweet, affectionate and puppy-like I was acting. I responded by giving her a huge tail wag and yes, a smile!

Blondie/Brownie

E-mail to a friend

Courtesy Listing Only! Please call number below for more info. Meet Blondie and Brownie! At just 8 weeks of age, these sweet pups are playful, active little sisters in the perpetual hunt for toys and then soft spots to crash and take a nap. Blondie is the leader of the pair as she investigates unfamiliar territory and then waves to Brownie to come on over once the coast is clear! This dynamic duo has a ton of love and yes, fur to share with the perfect family. If you are in the market to expand your fur family, please call 434-842-2594. Update: Blondie has been rehomed.

Bonnie

E-mail to a friend

Hello! My name is Bonnie and I have heard the staff whispering that I have the best, most endearing smile around! They say I raise my upper lip just like a human and viola, there's my smile! I am a gorgeous tickhound who consistantly sports a sunny, cheerful disposition. More recently, I suffered a huge and what I thought was irrepairable heartache. You see, I lost my brother and best friend, Clyde to illness. I was quickly teamed up with Beau however, who literally breathed new life into me. I am no longer known as the "grieving hound" which makes me and the staff very happy. I am a smart girl who is good at figuring out ways out of my enclosure, so I would need a very secure area to play outside, or I would need someone to walk me on a leash. Please come on by today to meet me and my new roommate, Beau.

Buster

E-mail to a friend

Howdy, I am Buster, and I am an adult hound mix who was born in 2001. I am a happy and friendly guy, and volunteers have been spending time with me teaching me lots of good manners. Here are some things that have been said about me (all true, I might add): "Buster will always give you his paw, especially if he feels you are not giving him the attention he deserves." "He loves to give hugs and loves to receive ear massages." "Buster is an all-around friendly guy who gets along well with other dogs." Yep, that's me. Please click on my picture to read more about me!

Butch

E-mail to a friend

Hi, I'm Butch, and I am an adult neutered male hound. I am friendly and easy-going, and I like to take time to smell the flowers (and whatever else I come across!) when I go on walks. I would love to meet somebody who would enjoy taking meandering strolls with me. I used to live with Ashley, who was one of the shyer dogs here at the Sanctuary. They say that I helped her become more confident because I have a laid-back personality. I guess that's true, but I'm just being me. P.S. Lovely Ashley has been adopted! You can read some more about me by clicking on my photo.

Caramel Kiss

E-mail to a friend

Courtesy Listing Only. Please refer to contact below. For such a sweet delight, how could I go by any other name than Caramel Kiss. Those close to me call me Kiss for short, but I will also come to "hey, you!" At the tender age of close to 5 months, an active home with kids and and other dogs who need my guidance and leadership skills would suit me just fine. Built more like my mom who was a 26lb beagle, I also have some traces of dad who was a Brittany spaniel mix. Weighing in at just 18lbs, for a little guy such as myself I have already proven to be a superior fence scaler (a 6ft fence will work best for me)and a quick learner on basic commands. A total gentleman at the vet when I got my first round of shots, I know I have it in me to be the perfect pet. To learn more, email Rayn at r.rock@earthlink.net or call her at 804-310-1177.

Cherokee

E-mail to a friend

Hi Everyone! As a seasoned CFC veteran, the only reason I can figure I have not yet found my new perfect home is that volunteers and staff love me so very much that they show off all the other dogs and keep me out exploring the trails around CFC on a leash!! With such a schedule, I have no hopes of finding my new home. LOL. But seriously, while I am a staff favorite, I can see how they find me totally adorable! I am super on a leash, very friendly and am great at holding my end of the conversation. Great at nuzzling into you and vying for your affection, I have exactly what it takes to be your perfect pet. Stop by today and let me show you.

Dallas

E-mail to a friend

Dallas has arrived!! After much fan fare, this fabulous shepard mix has unpacked his bags at CFC and is now taking interviews for his new role as family pet. "On order" from a county shelter in the South for months now, Dallas has had a series of medical issues which he has all overcome. Healthy, bubbly, and very huggable, this is one dog everyone absolutely loves. No really! Although full grown, Dallas still has a puppy energy and attitude which is irresistable. On the perpetual hunt for a canine to play with, Dallas is a great dog that will always bring a huge smile to your face. Dallas is a one of a kind gem-dog so hurry on by and let him be yours!

Danica

E-mail to a friend

Adopted in September! Danica and her brother Dale were found wandering down an animal lover's driveway hungry and ready to unpack their bags. Unable to keep this handsome duo, CFC opened their sanctuary doors to these super friendly and playful pups. At just 6 months of age, they have both already mastered the art of hamming it up for the photographer and weaseling their way into the hearts of staff and volunteers at CFC. Stop by soon and see why this "racing" pair is truly on the fast track to becoming perfect pets!

Deuce

E-mail to a friend

Hello, I'm Deuce, and I was born in the spring of 2007. I was found under a dumpster at the local landfill with a bunch of my siblings when we were just tiny pups. Me and my brother Jax were adopted right away, but our adoptive family's circumstances became more complicated than they expected, and two adolescent high-energy fellas like us were more than they could handle, so we're back here at CFC and ready to find the right home. Although we are very bonded, it is not necessary for us to be adopted together. Like I said, we're energetic, and we're also athletic and pretty strong, so a good match would be with people who have or appreciate those qualities. I am mostly black with a little white on my chest. I have a soulful gaze, and although I can get a little excited when I first meet someone (and sometimes can be a little shy, too), I love human attention and to be petted, especially around my ears.

Dottie

E-mail to a friend

Hi, I am Dottie, and I am a gentle adult female hound mix who was born in approximately 2004. When I arrived at Caring for Creatures, I could be quite reserved, but time has shown me how much fun life can be. I enjoy playing with my roommate, Maria, people watching while lounging on my table (I especially enjoy watching those people who have either leashes or treats in hand!), and going for walks. You can read more about me by clicking on my photo!

Dusty

E-mail to a friend

Hello! My name is Dusty and I was one of the "famous" landfill puppies (you might have read about me in the paper), rescued from under a dumpster at the landfill in the summer of 2007. Now that I am over 3 yrs old, I am anxious to find my new forever home. I have some huge fans at the shelter who always pick me first to head out for walks and this makes me feel really good. In fact, you should see my face light up (and it really does!) when I know it's my turn to spend time with you and explore the CFC grounds. Over the last few years I have seen roommates come and go but sadly my forever home has not found me. I can be a bit nervous when I meet new folks but being the curious guy that I am, you better believe me that I will come on over and give you a once over. With my strikingly handsome physique, I am a little more "selective" in giving out my love and kisses as frankly probably everyone wants them! LOL. When I do "accept" you into my inner circle, you can bet it's fabulous!

Eden

E-mail to a friend

Adopted in August! My name is Eden, and I came to CFC in March of 2009 as a transfer from the Fluvanna SPCA when they had an overcrowding problem. Born in 2008, I'm a very cute Terrier Mix. Being a young girl, I have some energy for walks and play-time, but I also have a very sweet side. I love attention, and I'm ready to become your best buddy!

Elizabeth

E-mail to a friend

Hello, I am Elizabeth, and I am a senior female beagle mix who was born around 1997. A nice person brought me to the Sanctuary in May 2007 after I was found living on my own in Palmyra. I am very friendly and have thoroughly enjoyed stealing the hearts of all at CFC since I arrived. I currently reside in Jewel's office where I greet visitors by jumping and scratching at the door. I love pretty much anyone and everything (human and or dog) I meet. I also really love food, so please make sure you don't put anything near me unless you intend for me to consume it!

Elroy

E-mail to a friend

At the young age of 11, I have just finished unpacking my bags here at CFC. By the looks of things, this is my kind of place. I have staff totally swooning over me and telling me how handsome, sweet, patient and darn right loveable I am. I would swear, my tail has never thumped with joy as much as it has since my arrival. Smile. Smile. One of my trademark tricks which gets everyone in stitches, is when we pretend to head out for a walk and I drop on all fours, roll over, bat my manly eyes and beg for belly rubs. This game works everytime and boy do we ALL enjoy it!! I hear there are two other distinguished, senior beagles here in residence so I might pop by their quarters to see when they are firing up their next game of canine-monopoly!! I am having such a blast but at the end of the day, I would still like to have my own pillow and permanent home to call my own.

Felicia

E-mail to a friend

Hi, my name is Felicia, and I am an adult female hound mix, estimated to have been born in approximately 2000. I am a bit skittish, but I am working on trusting the gentle advances of the staff and volunteers here. I get along with my roommate Tequila, who has been showing me that humans can be friends, especially when they have treats! It will take a lot of time and patience to fully convince me, but the people here seem to be willing to give me a lot of both. More recently, I have hopped on the clue bus with Tequila and now join him as he heads out for walks. I might run a few laps around my pen as Tequila is being hooked up for his walk but eventually settle down and head out to explore the CFC grounds. In heading out for my walk, I would swear I act like a kid in a candy store. I have a huge grin on my face and can't wait to explore EVERYTHING! At times I might even pant with excitement! Turns out I am a good walker and frequently turn around to give my walker a gentle kiss and random mini hug. I make my walkers very happy as I am very appreciative of their efforts in working with me.

Fonzie

E-mail to a friend

Hi! I'm Fonzie, and I am a neutered male black lab/hound mix who was born on July 28, 2000. I was found in a drainpipe at a concrete factory with my brother Kramer (who has been adopted). I can be shy, but thanks to volunteers who walk me every week, I have become much more confident. I know how to sit, and I walk well on the leash. Sometimes on my walks I stop and give the human on the other end of the leash a cute look, and then they pet me for a while. I'm always amazed that it works, but I'm not complaining!

Foxy

E-mail to a friend

Hello - my name is Foxy, and I'm a cute Pomeranian Mix who came to CFC as a transfer from the SPCA. They think I was born in 1998, and when I came to CFC they were told I could be a little 'snappy' when I was picked up. It was discovered that I have some arthritis that was hurting me when folks picked me up, and since being put on medication for the pain, I've been just fine. I'm a very sweet, loving girl, who gets to stay in the Medical Technician's office along with another older lady, Elizabeth. We get to greet all who come in, and keep each other company.

Hey there! I'm Harley, and I came to CFC in July of 2009 as a transfer from the Charlottesville SPCA. I'm a Hound Mix who was born sometime in 2007. I'm a very handsome, strong, high energy dog, who would need a loving home where I can gets lots of time to play.

Harriet

Harriett has more recently been promoted to "manager" of the Scratching Post. In her new position, she is in charge of mixing and mingling with the cats who call this building home and making sure the staff is giving her enough attention. She has a reputation of being excellent with cats and enjoys playing with them. She has also been known to "steal" cat toys and squirrel them away for enjoyment later on! Stop by today and see how much fun and good times Harriett can bring to your life.

Horrey

E-mail to a friend

Hey there! My name is Horrey, and I am an adult shepherd mix who was born around 1999. I arrived at the sanctuary with my brother Amos when our family couldn’t care for us. Sometimes I can still be a bit shy with people when I first meet them, but once we go out for a walk or two, I’m not very shy at all. Here are some things I love to do: go for walks, swim (actually, I really like to wade, then plunk myself down in shallow water at the edge of the pond or in my pool), get brushed (especially in the spring), and watch for visitors arriving at the sanctuary. Don’t be confused--even though my name is Horrey, you might also hear some of the volunteers and staff around here call me “a real teddy bear” and “my sweetheart.” Please click on my picture to read more about me!

Hutch

E-mail to a friend

Hello, I am Hutch, and I am an adult neutered male hound who was born around 2001 or 2002. I am somewhat timid, but I am warming up to the idea of human companionship. I have warmed up enough that when it is time to head out for a walk, I race to the front of my pen (not the back as I used to!) and patiently wait to be hooked up. I am fairly easy going, love exploring, and really love hanging out with my roommie, Starsky.

Jackson

Courtesy Listing Only. Please refer to contact below. Jackson, as in Action Jackson, is my name and boy does it suit me!! At the tender age of close to 5 months, a very, very active home with kids and and other dogs who need my guidance and leadership skills would suit me just fine. Laps to laze around in would also bring me such delight! Built more like my mom who was a 26lb beagle, I also have some traces of dad who was a Brittany spaniel mix. Weighing in at just 16lbs, my foster mom praises me for quickly understanding basic commands and feels I will likely grown up to be a tall, slender fellow tipping the scales at 40lbs. A total gentleman at the vet when I got my first round of shots, I know I have it in me to be the perfect pet. To learn more, email Rayn at r.rock@earthlink.net or call her at 804-310-1177.

Hello, I'm Jax, and I was born in the spring of 2007. I was found under a dumpster at the local landfill with a bunch of my siblings when we were just tiny pups. Me and my brother Deuce were adopted right away, but our adoptive family's circumstances became more complicated than they expected, and two adolescent high-energy fellas like us were more than they could handle, so we're back here at CFC and ready to find just the right home. Although we are very bonded to each other, it is not necessary for us to be adopted together. Like I said, we're energetic, and we're also athletic and pretty strong, so a good match would be with people who have or appreciate those qualities. Deuce and I look a lot alike, but I am the one with the distinctive white stripe on my snout. My ears are also a little bigger than his.

Jeckle

E-mail to a friend

Hi! I'm Jeckle a friendly, affectionate beagle mix who was born in early 1995. Over the years I have shared my quarters with a myriad of other smaller dogs but have recently been "upgraded" to hang out in Mary's office (the king-pin here at CFC) where I have assigned myself to be her right hand "man." When not helping Mary answer the phone and file (LOL), I love heading out to play in my pool in the summertime (see pic!) and of course take a walk through one of the trails at the sanctuary.

JJ

Courtesy Listing Only. Please refer to contact below. Fun loving and sweet, JJ is my name and playtime is my game! At the tender age of close to 5 months, an active home with kids, other dogs and plenty of laps would suit me just fine. Weighing in at just 15lbs (mom was a beagle and dad a Brittany spaniel), for a little guy such as myself I can totally spread out and take over laps and pride myself in being a quick learner on basic commands and leash walking. A total gentleman at the vet when I got my first round of shots, I know I have it in me to be the perfect pet. To learn more, email Rayn at r.rock@earthlink.net or call her at 804-310-1177.

Joy

E-mail to a friend

Hello! I'm Joy, and I am a senior tri-colored hound who was born on July 4, 1996. More recently, I have been promoted as "office assitant" so in stopping by the sanctuary, you will likely find me working hard in the nice air-conditioned environment and quite possibly sacked out in my big poofy dog bed! Some of the things I like outside of my "desk job" are other dogs, my pool (when it's hot), running around, long walks with lots of stops for petting, and treats! I have had some training, and I walk well on a gentle leader, but my main goal in life is to have a human of my own to love. Although I'm a medium-energy kind of gal, I am very content to curl up next to my favorite human and take a nap.

Kia

E-mail to a friend

Hi, My name is Kia, and I am a female black and white lab/hound mix who was born around 1999. I came to CFC through the Columbia Rescue. My flecks of wispy white hair interspersed in my shiny black coat make me very distinguishable. I am a tad shy when I first meet you, but with a little time and effort, you will find I am a very friendly girl! When you first enter my pen, I am likely to run circles around you, but once I know you, I will come when you call and invite you to join me on my wooden sofa bed. I can be very cuddly and will eagerly climb into laps and hang out for as long as allowed. I love to roll around on my back and tend to wiggle all over when I am excited/happy. I am super on a leash and am extremely fond of my roommie, Buster.

Krystle

E-mail to a friend

Hello! I'm Krystle, and I came to CFC in January of 2009 as a transfer from the Fluvanna SPCA. I'm a young Lab Mix, born in early 2008. I'm great with other dogs, and I do prefer their company to kitty cats. I have lots of energy, and would be a great running partner - I'll run along right beside you! I'm very sweet and loveable, too! I can be a bit of an escape artist, so a little extra diligence would be needed to keep an eye on me. Please click on my photo to read more about me!

Laverne

E-mail to a friend

Hi, I'm Laverne, and I am an adult female tri-color hound who was born around 2001. I am shy but warm up a bit once you get to know me. I've heard people say I have lovely markings. Hint: If you tell me things like that (also that I'm pretty and smart and cute and intelligent...you get the idea), I warm up a little faster. Especially if you have a yummy treat in your hand. More recently, I have embraced the concept of exploring the beautiful grounds of CFC. When volunteers come to walk my roommate, Sundance, I get even more excited than he does and now allow the walkers to hook me up so we can all go explore together. I am very curious and love to see what is going on outside of my pen.

Lindsey

E-mail to a friend

Adopted in August! Tiny and oh so very delicate, Lindsey is a precious little lady who grins with her teeth! Found wandering at a local campground, Lindsey arrived at CFC underweight, shy and red and raw on the top of her feet due to mange. This incredibly forgiving and loving girl is on the mend and ready to climb into laps and make herself comfy. Like any self respecting diva-girl, Lindsey has no problem being hand fed (lol) and being totally pampered. Once you meet Lindsey you too will love her so much that you'll want to go that extra step to make sure her every need is met. Stop by today and look for Lindsey in our Vet Tech's office which she delights in sharing with 3 other smaller dogs.

Lucky

E-mail to a friend

Hello, I'm Lucky! I am still on the shy side even though I have been at CFC for a few years now, but I am getting better day by day. I am told I have made huge strides and will cautiously welcome you as you enter into my pen. I love exploring outside of my pen and enjoy slow, gentle scratches on my back and ears. I am currently roomming with Mona (a beautiful blonde chow mix, might I add!) who is a real spitfire and keeps me company.

Malcolm

E-mail to a friend

Hello! I'm Malcolm, and I am an adult hound mix (heavy on the mix). I came to CFC in Spring 2008 from the local SPCA when they were experiencing space issues. I am a good-looking, friendly, happy-go-lucky guy who loves hanging out with human pals. Recently swarmed by an excited group of Girl Scouts on an outing at CFC, you should have seen how patient and darn right friendly and easy going I was with them. The girls and the yes, the staff are still talking about how super I was! Please click on my photo to read more about me

Maria

Hello, My name is Maria, and I am a sweet tri-color hound mix. My life has not always been as good as it is these days. You can see from my picture that at some point in my travels, I lost a little piece of my ear, although it's nice that it gives me a very distinctive look and it makes me easy to pick out in group photos! I enjoy people watching and going on walks.

Marshall

Bet the picture of me laughing made you stop and look!! Gotcha!! Believe it or not, this was my first picture on the camera since returning to CFC in August. To catch me with a huge grin and simply enjoying life, well, honestly that is how I am day in day out. Orginally found as a stray and pulled by CFC from the Fluvanna SPCA, I was adopted into a super family last July which didn't work out and then I was scooped up into a foster home where they almost adopted me but then the family lost their job. My bad luck so I am back at square one! With so much drama in my life, I am so pleased to say that I still take everything in stride. I am easy going, love other dogs and was just informed that I will be "working" at the Scratching Post at CFC where I will be supervising the cats who call this building home. I can't wait to scurry around and see some of my old cat friends but what would really, really make my day is to settle into my new home. Come on by and let's see if we can't make a deal!

Max

Hello! I'm Max, and I'm a pretty Chow/Retriever Mix, born in 2007, and after originally coming to CFC as a puppy, I was adopted in May of 2008. I was returned to CFC in July of 2009, when my family could no longer care for me. I'm a friendly guy who's full of energy, so my dream is to have a home where I can get lots of play time!

Mia

Velveteen to the touch and oh, so very tiny, I carried a lot of extra luggage with me when I first arrived at CFC. I was found as a very skinny stray covered with what felt like pounds of ticks and fleas. After several days of the homecooking here at the sanctuary, I am really exicted to show off my new and improved body!! With my ribs no longer jutting out, I am feeling so much better and everyone knows it. I call out to people from my crate in the Scratching Post area hoping to get extra scraps of attention. I adore cuddling in laps and am told I am one terrific, friendly bundle of joy. As darling as I am, I have high hopes of moving into my new home pronto, so stop by and check me out before it's too late.

Millie

E-mail to a friend

Millie and two other dogs were temporarily housed at CFC while the owner was taking care of some health issues at home. The dogs were released to the vet but within a short time were permanently surrendered when she could no longer take care of the animals properly. Since arriving at the sanctuary, Millie has made lots of friends...canine and human alike. She has also grown into the perfect leash walker and her tail will wag at full throttle when she sees a volunteer approaching her kennel with a leash. Super friendly and always eager to meet new bodies, Millie would love a forever home with a large fenced yard to run and play in and in return, you could count on Millie rewarding her new guardian with an endless supply of kisses, a touch of fur and huge tail wags.

Missy

E-mail to a friend

Missy could be just peaking in her Golden Years! At the young age of just 12, Missy is now free from her prior lifestyle of being tied up by a chain. When her elderly caregivers were no longer able to provide for her, she lucked out in landing a spot here where she is enjoying a double occupancy unit with one of our senior, distinguished hounds. Very sweet, patient and friendly, this great girl loves everyone she meets and has her paws crossed that one more miracle is on the horizon for her...a new home!

Mona

Adopted in August! Foxy momma? What, me?? Well maybe. Truth be told I am really more chow than anything else. My current photos show me sporting a very sleek jacket. If you dig through my other pictures you will see how I was before I was sent to the groomer for a slight "clip." I was covered with huge mats and prior to CFC inviting me to join them, the county shelter where I had been for the last 6 weeks, did what they thought was best for me. Moving onto other topics outside of my "fur" though, what makes me so very special is that I am a very patient, easy going gal. In my new home here at CFC, what excites me the most is heading out for walks and meeting new people. I think you'll agree when you meet me that I am such a very sweet, agreeable girl. To deny me my right of being a family pet would be such a crime.

Adopted in July! Dull moment?? What on earth is that?? For me, every minute of every day is exciting and there is always a reason to rejoice and have a good time. Call me party central. Call me whirl-a-gig of huge tail wags and super sized kisses. Even I amaze myself at how energetic, friendly and so very happy I am each day when I appear from my doggy house. Everyone I meet is greeted with massive all over body wiggles, big wet kisses and hugs (if they let me!). I am a larger fellow (I am told bigger is better!) with a cool wavy black coat of fur who loves nothing better than to hit the trails and explore the wonders of nature. I have a huge heart of gold and in selecting me for you canine companion, I can promise you an endless supply of doggy excitement and love all accented with a touch of black fur. Come check me out today and see why I am so irresistable!

Monty found his way to Caring For Creatures in 2007 extremely underweight, loaded with parasites and covered with fleas and ticks. He desperately needed a place to rest his weary body and as luck would have it, we had the perfect spot for him here at the sanctuary. Monty quickly blossomed into a very handsome and healthy dog who craves people and loves to play. Like most higher energy fellows, Monty could benefit from a dog training class or even an agility class where he could put to good use that wonderful doggie energy. Stop by and ask any staff member or volunteer what they think about Monty and chances are really good that their whole face will light up and say, "We all LOVE that dog!"

Everyone who meets me, loves me. No really! I suppose the one exception was the man at the county landfill who thought it would be fun to use me for target practice. I was fast to get out of that bad environment and luckily wound up here where I can be appreciated. I am told that I am exceptionally sweet, very patient, an over-achiever when it comes to kissing and a pure delight to be around. Since arriving here, I was quickly matched up with a shy puppy who needed an older brother of sorts to show her the ropes. I think I have done a great job as she is now all tail wags and smiles when she meets new people. When not playing the role of wise older brother, I love heading out for walks but really, really love lap/cuddle time. I know I bring a lot to the table as the perfect pet, so come on by today before you lose your one chance at me!

At long last, I am finally on the fast track to find my new home. Found as a stray in the winter of 2009, a hound rescue in the North committed to take me in but until a spot opened up, a kind woman running a beagle rescue took me into her home. As fabulous as it was to be surrounded by so many beagles, as families filtered through the home, I was clearly the odd man out and NOT a beagle. Days went by, then weeks and then months and my hound rescue never had space for me. Finally, I took matters into my own paws and contacted CFC. I can't tell you how exciting it is to be surrounded by all types of dogs and to see families strolling the grounds in search of their perfect pet. I could be THE hound for you as I am super with other dogs, very easy going, unflappable and darn right friendly. With three years of pet experience, I know I have what it takes to make some family really, really happy. Smile. Smile.

Let me introduce myself - my name is Rosie, and I'm a pretty Border Collie Mix. I came to CFC in February of 2009 when they had an overcrowding problem at the Fluvanna SPCA. Born around 2004, I'm still a young girl, and like a lot of Border Collies, I have lots of energy. I crave attention from humans, and I'm always ready for a belly-rub! The staffers here think it's funny that no matter where they place my food bowl, I always pick it up very carefully and place it where I want it, never spilling a drop. Can I help if I'm particular?!Please click on my photo to read more about me!

It's funny. The staff call me an "oversized" beagle. How crazy is that? What I know for sure is that I am a very friendly fellow who is used to sharing my love with lots of adults at the same time. Having grown up in an assisted care facility, I was fortunate in being able to meet and greet new people all the time. For over 5 years, I shared my tail wags and love who those who needed it most. More recently, my caregiver had become unpredictable which made me a bit nervous and we felt I would be better suited in a new home. I am ok with other dogs but if you have a home where I can rule the roost, this suits me just fine.

Talk about a rollercoaster! You see, I along with my sibling Shoney, lost our caregiver to cancer beginning of April and we were promptly dropped off at a county shelter in SC. We were safe or so we thought. While the shelter was a high kill facility, the staff took an immediate interest in us and from week to week we made the "cut." And then it happened. Shoney woke with a start one night as he overheard other dogs on the kennel run whispering that his name was on the "list." The list meant he would not make it. His time was up. I was not on the list but I would be left behind. I started pacing and then the tears started to flow. Click my photo to read more...

Scotch

Hi, I'm Scotch, and I was found along the road with my sister Brandy, who has been adopted, in December 2007. I was probably born sometime around November 2007, and when I arrived as a younger puppy, I really looked a lot like a black lab mix. Since then, one of my ears has decided to stick straight up (extraordinarily adorable, but apparently not very lab-like). So, it's back to the drawing board deciding what my heritage might be. I'm not too big, and I'm extremely friendly. I have a beautiful jet black coat with a white blaze on my chest. And, of course, a pair of very distinctive ears. One of my favorite things to do is to explore outside of my pen. In particular, I love going on walks, or better yet, runs! In approaching my pen, it's very possible that I might be bouncing off my walls. Did I mention that I have some extra energy?? Luckily volunteers do their best to walk me once or twice a week, or if I am super lucky, one of them might run me. If you are into lots of exercise and perhaps would delight in the infinite kisses I will bestow upon you, I could be your perfect match. Come check me out!

Scout

Scout is a hound mix who was born in the spring of 1997. His original owner was not feeding him or providing shelter for Scout and his brother Cherokee. They were taken to the SPCA and when space became the issue, CFC took Scout and Cherokee. Scout’s blind in one eye, most likely due to some trauma but you’d never know it the way he watches what is going on around him. Scout is a strong, active dog, who craves human attention. He would thrive best in a farm setting, where he could use his energy in a positive way.

Hi! I'm Shadow, and I am an adult lab-hound mix. I am an energetic medium-size dog who looks a lot like a small Black Lab. I am friendly, intelligent, and sensitive and love heading out to explore the CFC grounds. I delight in spending quiet time with visitors in my pen and will come bouncing over to you should you decide to sit for a spell. I tend to race over to give you a quick kiss (like a kissing bandit!) and will then dart away. If you stay long enough, I might hang out with you and allow you to massage my neck and back area.

When I thought no one was looking, I knelt down and kissed the ground at CFC when I first arrived. You see, when my guardian died beginning of April, I along with my sibling, Sara Lee were promptly unloaded at a county shelter in SC. The staff immediately embraced us as we were so big, friendly, beautiful and handsome. From week to week we made the "cut" as this was a high kill shelter. I woke with a start a few weeks ago when I heard other dogs on the kennel run whispering about my name coming up on the "list." The "list" meant my time was up. I wasn't going to make it. Tears started running down my face. Click my photo to read more...

Hello! I am Starsky, and I am a lab-shepherd mix who was born around 2001 or 2002. I am an easy-going, handsome, friendly dog. My favorite things are probably my kong toys, which I like to carry around with me. I'll gladly show them to you when you come to visit. I also enjoy stealing hearts (I've captured quite a few!), going for walks (I'm a great leash walker), and hanging out with my buddy Hutch. Update: Although I was adopted in September 2008, I was returned to the Sanctuary in November when my new family developed health problems that made it too difficult for them to keep me. Please click on my picture to read what the CFC staff has to say about me.

Hi! My name is Stephie and I feel as though I have just woken up and won the lottery. You see, I have spent my whole, short life tethered on a long cable. I felt there had to be more to life than pacing in a 12ft radius and took a big, big chance at starting a new life for myself. I chewed my way through my 1/4in cable, 2 1/2 feet of which remained attached to my collar when I presented myself to a family who seemed pet friendly. Turns out they were not able to care for me but hooked me up with the super nice people at CFC. I keep pinching myself thinking I am still in a dream. My movement is no longer restricted by a cable and I am a free girl. I can't tell you how much of a thrill it is for me to be able to run around in my large pen, hop up on my wooden sofa, go out and explore the CFC grounds on a leash and meet and greet new and exciting faces. In meeting me, you will see I am all smiles, tail wags and overall body wiggles. I have a new lease on life and can't help but share my excitement with everyone. I will freely slather you with kisses and mini hugs and invite you into my new home for an exclusive tour. Consider stopping by today to see how contageous my zest for life is!

I have been a very busy girl but not in a good way. After losing all 17 of my pups due to illness in February, I was faced with an uphill battle of infections which gave me a huge fever and zapped all energy out of me. For 3 months I sat in a county shelter with my head bowed down and my tail tucked ever so tightly. I felt terrible and knew a shelter was no place for a dog to get back on her feet but was helpless to do anything about it. Somehow, the Dog Gods reached out to me and hooked me up with a volunteer who took me in for a few weeks. By chance and luck, CFC had a vacancy and my heart soared when my foster mom told me I would have a bed to call my own at the sanctuary! My foster mom found that initially I was very shy and would keep to myself. I was extremely polite, great on a leash and was totally housebroken. Over our 3 weeks together, she learned that I have a heart of gold and am so very loyal. She saw me smile, relax and become a fully integrated member of the family. Once I know you, I will come when you call and let me tell you my whole body will girate with excitement! When not enjoying the great outdoors, I am content to curl up in the family room with a chewy bone and watch tv with the family. Foster mom said I was so unbelieveably respectful of her 3 cats that it made it even tougher for her to not add me as a permanent member of her family. While some may say in this part of VA that hounds are a dime a dozen, let me assure you I am no ordinary hound and could quite possibly be the most perfect pet! Just ask foster mom!

Hey there, I am Sundance, and I am an adult hound mix. I am a friendly guy who loves people and currently shares quarters with Laverne. I have a very outgoing personality and have been randomly paired up with other dogs on walks, which is really just fine with me. I am easy going, enjoy attention, and will eagerly welcome you to my pen with "open paws." I am quiet and unassuming and would bring a wonderful, subtle "dog touch" to any home. Come see for yourself!

Sweet Pea

Hello. My name is Sweet Pea and yes, that's right, I'm sweet just like my name. I arrived at Caring For Creatures in February of 2009 when our local SPCA had too many dogs and not enough room for them. That seems to be the story at a lot of shelters lately. It makes me sad because I know there are so many more sweet dogs like me who need a place. I'm happy here at the sanctuary but I sure would love a home of my own. I'm a cuddly, laid-back kind of girl who truly enjoys the company of humans. I get along fine with other dogs too. You can see I have a lot going for me. I'm a pretty tricolor beagle mix. I'm even more special (if that's possible) because I have blue ticking on me. I'd love to meet you so why not plan a visit to Caring For Creatures. I'll be waiting!

Hi there! My name is Tango, and I'm a Tri-color Hound born around 2005. I arrived at CFC in February of 2009 from the Fluvanna SPCA when they had an overcrowding problem. Arriving in very poor health (see notes on next page), lots of work went into rehabilitating me. Today, I smile a very big smile and my tail gentle wags back and forth as both my health and spirit have been restored. I have been described as an exceptionally laid back fellow who is as gentle as they come. I am a sweet, sweet guy who wants lots of attention, and loves to cuddle. I have experience at working adopt-a-thons and the volunteers and staff had nothing but huge compliments to pass along to me. They commented that I ever so smoothly worked the potential adoptor crowd, politely navigated the other pets available for adoption and was a complete gentleman. I could go on and on, but I'll only make the other dogs look bad! Go ahead and stop by today so I can show you how truly fabulous I really am. No really! Please click on my photo to read more about me!

Hi! In my world, bigger = better! Weighing in at just 54lbs, most of my weight is due to my lush, plush jacket of fur. After being dropped off at a high kill shelter by my family which previously included kids, my frantic search to find a new home led me to this sanctuary. The staff has already found out how sweet and oh, so huggable I am! They now also know that I am a great leash walker and really love everyone I meet. I am so very, very friendly that it's possible I might be overwhelming for smaller dogs but rest assured I am really all just huge tail wags and smiles. When not entertaining the staff by taking dives in my pool, I can always go for a squeaky toy or raw hide bone to idle away the day. Stop by today and see why I bring a new meaning to a soft, cuddly dog.

Hey there! I am Tequila and I am a medium-size tri-color hound who was born around 2005. I am social and friendly and am getting some one-on-one training to teach me to walk on my leash with a harness and some basic obedience commands. I am a smart guy (with an attentive expression) and a bit of a clown who loves to play. My ideal home would be with folks who have a sense of humor like mine and who will be committed to exercising both my body and my brain!

Hello! My name is Timothy, and I am an adult Retriever-Sheltie mix. Despite my somewhat shy tendencies, I really enjoy one-on-one time with humans. I am a medium-size dog who seems smaller because of my slight build. I love to get as much of myself on a lap as possible, but don't get me wrong...I have plenty of energy. Because of my perfect mix of being both high energy and eager to please, I might do really well with someone who wants to do some agility training with me.

Hey there, I am Troy, and I am a handsome neutered male black and white hound (and maybe some pointer?) mix who was born around 2004. Violet has spent the better part of her life raising family after family of little ones. As busy as this super lady has been, she is fast to stop and take the time to smell the flowers. Easy going, very gentle and oh, so sweet, this dynamite lady is ready to start life anew. Arriving with her best friend and buddy, Sprite, Violet has a hint of shyness which quickly evaporates when she knows she has a soft cuddly lap to hang out in. As tiny and terribly photogenic as she is, Violet has not even unpacked her bags as she knows her new family is coming really soon to bring her on home!

I'm a stunning blue-tick hound mix. My birthdate is probably some time in 1999. Like most hounds, I'm very sweet natured and devilishly attractive. Don't you agree? People tell me my ears are so soft that they feel like "velvet." The word around the Sanctuary is also that I'm a great kisser. My absolute favorite activity is to head out on a leash and see what is going on outside of my pen. I love walking on a leash. No, I mean really love it! When I see other "residents" heading out for a walk, I make it well known that my turn is next. I am patient, chatty, inquisitive, and love attention.
