OWEN- Vet Pet Pick!

  • HOUND- Sleek cream jacket, tan oval spots near hips, tan at base of tail, around face and ears.  53lbs
  • ADULT MALE; Est DOB: 2015
  • ARRIVAL: September 9, 2017
  • HISTORY:  Owen was pulled from a high kill shelter when space became an issue.  At the prior shelter,  he had taken up with a family as a stray but they could not keep him long term.
  • MEDICAL NOTE:  Owen has limited range of motion in his left hip likely due to an untreated older injury.  He takes daily meds to manage his pain.   Owen runs and plays like any normal, happy dog and the limited range of motion in his hip does not slow him down…at all!
I’m at my best surrounded by toys and more toys and yes, a human by my side. Howdy, folks.  It’s me Owen.  I love to play. I love my purple stuffy!!! I also like to chase tennis balls. Folks have commented on how I can seemingly self entertain for long periods of time if given just a few simple toys.  I will carry and throw toys around and then roll on my back in great delight.  Still can’t believe the good fortune I have come upon in winding up at CFC!   I’ve never met a stranger and I’m told I’m graced with a super sweet disposition typical of many hounds.  I’m a good match should you already have a dog in stock but cats look just like small little toys to me so they are not a good choice for me!  LOL. I’ll admit, I get very excited when I see someone heading toward my pen with a leash. I get so excited it’s hard for me to focus on what I’m told. But I sure am enthusiastic with my affection! I’m not so happy when it’s time to go back inside the pen, though. Sometimes I have to be lured inside because I am so afraid I’ll be left alone again. I would love to be adopted by someone who could be patient with me until I gain some confidence and feel secure once more.
More about Owen October 2020:
It’s Owen’s time to shine! We’re not sure why this incredibly handsome, fun-loving guy hasn’t had more adoption interest, so we’re giving him a moment to bask in the spotlight. Surely the right home is out there for him. Could it be with you?
Owen arrived at CFC almost exactly three years ago, and we’ve learned a lot about him since then. For example, we just recently learned he LOVES going for car rides! He hops right in and even flops on his back in delight as he settles in for a new adventure.
He gets super excited when he sees volunteers heading his way, and he has mastered the “sit” command. He is treat-motivated, which always makes training much easier, and he takes his treats very, very softly. He can be strong out of the gate, rarin’ to go, but once he burns off some energy, he’s a terrific walking partner. A regular exercise routine would keep him at his best. An old injury limiting the mobility of his left hind leg does not slow him down at all. He is eager and ready to hit the trails.
But what Owen is most famous for at CFC is his love of toys. Give him a toy, and he just lights up. You’ll swear he’s smiling as he runs around gathering all the toys, rolling around with them, and tossing them in the air. He can self-entertain, but he really likes to have a human partner in play. A note of caution though: he will tear his way through stuffed toys pretty quickly, so tough toys (especially with a squeaker) are the way to go, unless you enjoy cleaning up lots of stuffing.
We currently have Owen listed as a hound, but after spending some time with him, it’s clear a flavorful mix makes up his genetic recipe. There might be a pinch of Aussie or Border Collie in there, or even Brittany Spaniel. Whatever his background, we think you’ll agree that the result is one beautiful dog.
Owen is still young–only about five years old–and weighs in at around 53 pounds. He prefers a home without cats. He can get very excited meeting other dogs, and he hasn’t quite mastered the art of politely introducing himself to them, but that is something that can be worked on through training.
