Rehoming: Bernard came to us in January, over time we recognized significant reactivity.
Bernard is an approximately 2-year-old pit bull mix, around 40 pounds, with a white coat, fawn markings, and the most remarkable ears you’ve ever seen. He came to us from the Richmond Animal Control in January and has spent the last months becoming a well-mannered, loving dog who is deeply bonded to his people.
Bernard has completed an intensive training program including a three-week board and training with professional trainers. He walks beautifully on a leash, knows his commands, and is affectionate and playful with the people he trusts.
Bernard is looking for a very specific kind of home, and we want to be upfront about why. He is a reactive dog, and while his training has come a long way, he has had two incidents with unfamiliar people and has shown dog-directed aggression that makes him unsuitable for a multi-dog household. He needs an adopter who understands reactivity, has experience managing a dog with a bite history, and can provide structure, clear routines, and patient leadership.
Bernard is not a dog for a first-time owner, a home with other pets, or a home with young children. But in the right hands — someone who knows this world and knows how to help a dog like him succeed — Bernard has so much to give. He is loyal, smart, responsive to training, and will love his person with everything he has.
