Hound

HISTORY: Atticus and Finch were found as a strays on a local road.

Dumped on a road by a local farm, Atticus and Finch were very thin and in need of help. A Good Samaritan took them into her home and cared for them as long as she could but with 5 dogs and 5 cats already in the home, she was unable to keep them. Even after 2 weeks of being fed in the home, they were still thin when they arrived at the sanctuary.

Just 4-1/2 months old, Atticus and Finch are ready to wow you. These two boys are the sweetest pups – very social and friendly. While at the farm, they were around other dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, horses and cows with no issues. Our volunteers tell us that Atticus and Finch are very calm and well behaved, and they are benefiting from on-going training from our in-house trainer, Wen. They are learning to walk well on a leash and are starting to learn commands.

But don’t just take our word for it – come out and meet them and see for yourselves!

More about our pups:  Although these two pups have the same back story, their personalities are very different.

Atticus is very much a goofball, who fully embraces his inner hound. He is an extremely silly boy, who suffers from puppy ADD. When in the arena he is clearly more interested in the sights, smells and sounds, than earning a puppy diploma for focus and attention. That being said, he is still very trainable, and very food motivated. He is already learning to walk well on a leash, and knows the sit and down commands. He is getting better each day with his puppy obedience skills. He has the most adorable overbite, a nub tail, and the eyes of a prankster. He loves every person he meets, and is game to make new dog friends as well. If you are looking for a dog that will make you laugh till it hurts, this is your guy.

Finch is a very sweet and happy boy. He has very soulful green/ grey eyes. Although he is not as goofy as Atticus, he is still quite comical. Finch seems to find joy in everything he does. Whether it be play time in the arena, going for a stroll, or sitting in your lap for a cuddle. He embraces them all with enthusiasm. Finch has taken well to his training and is keen to learn more. He is learning to walk well on a leash, and has already learned the sit and down commands. If you are looking for a companion who is happy go lucky Finch definitely fits the bill.

Foster update on ATTICUS October 27 (Note:  Atticus is now back on site):

At only 5 months old, this charming young hound has far exceeded our expectations of the breed and has stolen our hearts in the few short days of fostering him. Atticus knows commands such as: sit, down, look, and wait, and is motivated by his training treats to learn more. On his second day being fostered, he learned to ring a bell to go outside to potty (if he wasn’t in the room with the bell, he would stand at the door and whimper to let us know he needed to go out). Atticus was quick to crate-train, had no issues “going to bed” in his crate all night, and had no accidents in the house. He didn’t jump up on us, or bark at all unless he was playing with the other dogs.

He wanted to play with my two smaller dogs a lot, but I believe dogs his own size would be best with his puppy energy; don’t get me wrong, he also enjoyed just lounging around and snuggling up near you. He enjoyed meeting our cats but didn’t pay them too much attention, and didn’t seem overly interested in our chickens, but was a little curious. He would do well in a home that has a fenced yard for him to run and play, and he did so well with our kiddo. He does need some guidance with house rules (he was interested in trying to see what’s on the kitchen counter or what’s in those potted plants) but listens well when you tell him not to do something – he catches on quickly!

During our time together, we noticed how emotionally sensitive he is. He can sense when someone needs comforting/snuggling if they’re sad, he was concerned when someone was hurt, and he was so gentle and gave kisses to my special needs child, giving lots of attention to her right hand which has limited mobility. He gives THE BEST snuggles, leaning in to give you so much love. Atticus has the cutest spots on his belly, the softest, floppiest ears, an overbite that will make you giggle, and the most sincere eyes.

More about me November 2024: Recently voted most likely to make YOU laugh and giggle, ATTICUS is the silliest of hounds and he’s ready to be your new and most loveable 24/7 full time 4 legged friend. Very much a teen at heart and on paper, if Atticus had a middle name it could easily be FUN! Atticus has never met a stranger and oh, what a joy it is to watch him run and explore in our play yard and then come crashing over to us in search of some love and TLC. We had an unattended bag of toys in the play yard during one of our photo sessions and Atticus took it upon himself to quickly and most covertly do a grab and go with plushy Woodstock in his mouth! He was eternally proud of his find and of his sneaky get away, tossing Woodstock as he trotted along and then toting it around in his mouth. Atticus is goofy, active, loving and confident around other dogs. On site, his best friend and roomie is Luna, a like minded doggy who is a perfect match for stronger wrestling and jousting play moves. In his new home, having a full time playmate would beautifully suit his more active outlook on life. As smart and intuitive as he is, he’s also proven to be a quick study of house rules and do’s and don’ts in the home environment. We’re excited to think about the lucky family that will welcome ATTICUS into their home. Oh, the fun you will all have together!
